This week is the Republican Convention, where first lady Melania Trump will make a case for her husband Donald Trump as he hopes to have a second term as president. In her speech to the members of her party, Melania makes the call for peace.
Melania is known for usually staying out of the spotlight when it comes to political events, focusing on being a parent to their only son Barron Trump while participating in White House events that are related to her Be Best initiative. She took center stage on the second day of the Republican convention, delivering a speech from the newly-renovated White House Rose Garden. The first lady touched on the civil unrest brought on by protests against police brutality and the Black Lives Matter, with more Americans joining in solidarity to put an end to systemic racism.
Prior to her speech, the convention also took a moment to pray for Jacob Blake, a Black man who was shot multiple times by police officers in Wisconsin over the weekend.
“Like all of you, I have reflected on the racial unrest in our country. It is a harsh reality that we are not proud of parts of our history. I encourage people to focus on our future while still learning from our past. We must remember that today we are all one community comprised of many races, religions, and ethnicities. Our diverse and storied history is what makes our country strong, and yet we still have so much to learn from one another,” said Melania.
Aside from noting the civil unrest, she also offered praise to her husband, describing him as an honest man who does not hide how he feels.
Her address, however, while praised by many of her fellow Republicans, has also earned backlash from several others aside from Democrats, especially with Morning Joe host and former Republican congressman Joe Scarborough. Scarborough ripped into Melania, calling her shameless for her calls for racial unity and diversity as well as her attack on the media and fighting against cyberbullying while simultaneously staying silent when her husband is known for attacking people who disagree with him and his political agenda on Twitter.
“Of course, never heard her criticize her own husband when he said that Mika was bleeding badly from a facelift or when I was a murderer or when a woman tragically passed away 19 years ago, her husband was begging Donald Trump to stop being so hateful and causing their family extraordinary pain, begging him to stop and he just continued over and over again causing pain for that family,” said Scarborough.
